San Antonio, Texas

With San Antonio being the second largest city in Texas, it is a great place to visit and learn about the history of the city. There are just over 1.3 million people currently living there who are more than happy to share their heritage. There are some great points of interest and learning possibilities in San Antonio, Texas. San Antonio is one of the few cities in the United States that has a huge military presence. There are 4 military bases located just in this city alone. San Antonio has some of the most historic sites that you will find anywhere in the United States.

San Antonio has a great history behind it, as American Indians originally inhabited the banks along the San Antonio River. In 1691, Spanish Explorers and missionaries stumbled upon the river on June 13 which happens to be the date of the feast of Saint Anthony. The name of the San Antonio river was patterned after that joyous day.

The Battle of the Alamo was fought in 1836. It was at the Battle of the Alamo where 189 defenders of the Alamo took on 4000 Mexican troops for 13 days. The Mexican troops won because they outnumbered the defenders. This is where the famous “ Remember the Alamo” cry was declared.

The AlamoThe Alamo is one of the most famous historic places that Texas has to offer. The Alamo was a mission and a fortress in the 18th century. The Alamo started out as a mission and a sanctuary that was erected by the Spanish Empire . The structure was also used as a place where Native Americans were educated after they converted to Christianity. Later in the century it was abandoned and then in the 19th century it was used as a fortress for any military conflicts. Today the Alamo is a Museum open to the public so that they can learn about the history by visiting.

The San Antonio River Walk is a well known walkway that follows along the San Antonio River. The walkway as it appears today is located one level below street level. The River Walk was designed by Robert Hugman in the 1920’s. He created it as an alternative to the city paving a way over the river. Instead they paved on the sides of it. Today, there are many shops and restaurants that flourish along the River Walk. The San Antonio River Walk brings thousands of visitors every year.

Another interesting part of San Antonio is the San Antonio Missions Nation Historical Park. This location houses the preservation of 4 or the 5 Spanish missions in San Antonia. The Mission was set up in 1716, it was first established in East Texas but in 1731 it was moved to San Antonio. The Missions were Concepcion, Espada, San Jose and San Juan Capistrano.

The historical sites and landmarks in San Antonio are a very educational part of the United States History. But many people also like to visit the places that are just plain fun to see. You may enjoy the Alamo and the River Walk but many come to San Antonio to see the professional basketball team, the San Antonio Spurs. If you can catch a game while you are there, that's an added bonus. Others may enjoy spending the day at the San Antonio Sea World. In San Antonio, you can learn and have fun all at the same time.
